term	reinforcer renforçateur
definition	the reinforcer is the stimulus, event, or condition which increases or maintains the frequency or strength of the behavior it follows. A reinforcing stimulus may also elicit an unconditioned response in a reflex.
context	- this study had several purposes. One purpose was to determine if scheduled exercise could serve as a reinforcer for a child remaining calm for a certain period of time. - the reinforcer would be 1 minute of play in an outside playground that contained gymnastic equipment and other climbing structures. The child would engage in activity for the full time and would not be prompted. - although this study was conducted on only one boy, it is interesting to see that vigorous activity served as a potent reinforcer. - a backup reinforcer is a reinforcer that may be received in exchange for a token. - something is only a reinforcer if it follows a behavior. Telling a child, "eat your dinner or you will not get desert" is not a reinforcer. It is a threat.
